Houston, May 2019: Described as a technology that Transocean believes to be game changing for the drilling industry, Kinetic Pressure Control’s “shear anything” technology called the Kinetic Blowout Stopper or “K-BOS” was highlighted as part of the retrofittable aShear emergency well control system by Transocean at the 2019 Offshore Technology Conference on 7 May. More than a blowout preventer, Jeremy Thigpen, Transocean President and CEO, called this tool “a blowout stopper” and said it is a top priority within the organization. “Talk about your ultimate insurance policy,” Mr. Thigpen said.
He explained further that technologies like K-BOS and aShear are core to a strategy that Transocean is pursuing to make offshore projects more competitive with shale plays. These technologies represent significant progress towards reducing risk and to increase offshore projects’ viability vs only a few years ago. Mr. Thigpen pointed to average breakevens for offshore projects, which are now down to $43, compared with $64 in 2016. The number of offshore FIDs has also increased over the same period, up to an expected 119 this year compared with 44 in 2016.
